Workshop: Decarbonizing Refining & Petrochemicals - From Revamping Assets to Natural Gas Utilization
The refining and petrochemical sectors are major pillars of the global economy. They rely heavily on hydrocarbon feedstocks and operate through capital-intensive, complex, and carbon-intensive processes. As the world moves toward lower emissions, each sector is seeking a decarbonization pathway that not only aligns with international climate goals but also ensures long-term competitiveness and continued access to global markets. This challenge is even more pressing for hydrocarbon-based economies, such as Qatar. Technology innovation lies at the heart of the solution. From electrification and carbon management to novel hydrogen-based processes, next-generation reactor technologies are redefining what is possible in the hydrocarbon industry—particularly within refining and petrochemicals.
Workshop objectives:
• Provide an overview of key innovative technologies, focusing on the dual challenge of reducing emissions while unlocking new value from hydrocarbon feedstocks.
• Covers decarbonization strategies with a focus on the energy sector in Qatar. It focusses on case studies for the systematic development and analysis of decarbonization scenarios. The goal is to share insights into enabling technology choices and their integration in relation to decarbonization goals towards net zero.
• Shed light on major energy transition trends, introduce innovative technological concepts, and outline critical development needs to bring these breakthrough technologies to life.
The workshop has distinguished speakers from industry and academia including TotalEnergies, Technip, Topsoe, Texas A&M University at Qatar, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, and Hamad Bin Khalifa University. The workshop has an interactive panel session to define challenges and opportunities for the case of Qatar.
The workshop program will be available online soon. Sign up using the Conference and Poster Submission Registration link.
